Welcome to the Kismet Public Library!
Here are some things you might like to know about using your library.
Library Services
Our new library building opened in January 2024, offering a friendly environment to serve our community better. There is a space for everyone. Come visit and stay awhile. Meet a friend and visit the coffee bar. Areas are available for reading the newspaper, a good book, or work on a puzzle. Computer stations are available for everyone. A play area is provided for the children to play. A safe room (storm shelter) provides shelter from incoming storms.
Check out the library calendar and register for upcoming events.
Children Services
The library offers Storytimes, books, and activities to help nurture a love of reading and learning. We also have a children’s area where parents and children can read, play, and learn.
Tiny Tot Storytime Program is for children 5 and younger and their caregivers. It is held on every second Wednesday of the month at 10:00. Toddlers will enjoy reading and sensory activities.
A Reward Chart Program is provided to encourage participation in the library.
The Summer Reading Program sign-up starts May 1st, and Programs begin in June and carry on through the middle of July. Weekly events and activities are posted on the Facebook page and webpage.
Through the year the library provides popular annual events such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Fall Festival, and Gingerbread Workshop.
Borrowing Services
Have you signed up for a library card? Library cardholders can borrow various library materials, books, magazines, Bird Watch Backpack, puzzles , DVD’s and much more. To obtain a library card, new patrons must fill out a completed application form with address and provide identification. If you’re under the age of 18, you must be accompanied by a signing adult. This adult will become financially responsible for all items checked out on the library card.
Patrons may place a hold on items which are in high demand and are charged out. The patron will be contacted when the reserved item has been returned. The item will be held for three days for the patron to pick up.
Overdue Materials
Circulating items may be checked out for two weeks and may be renewed twice unless others are waiting. Renewals may be made in person, by phone or by message. If you need more time with something you’ve checked out, you might be able to renew it for 14 days. Books may be returned to the library during regular business hours, and an outside book drop is available for drop off at any time. We do charge overdue fines of .10 cents per day, and if an item is not returned within 30 days of the date it was due, the item is automatically declared lost, and the borrower is charged for the price of the item. Popular new books may check out fast. You may call the library and ask for your name to be put on the hold list. The library will contact you when the book is available.
Interlibrary Loaning
Can’t find it at our library? You can use our interlibrary loan service to try to borrow the title from a different library system. A request can be made at the front desk, and it usually takes a week to 2 weeks to arrive. There is no fee for requesting a book.
Digital Library
Gain access to digital materials with the Kansas Library eCard: access research databases, Ebooks, audiobooks, and animated storybooks. The State Library of Kansas provides this free service to Kansas residents. This card is valid for three years and can be renewed. Sign up at the front desk.
Volunteer
The library provides a variety of meaningful ways for individuals, community groups, and businesses to showcase their commitment to the community through volunteering. Volunteers play a vital role in building a strong sense of community that enriches our lives. We are very grateful for all our volunteers who help us enhance our services with their time and dedication! If you are a student needing community hours, this is a great place to volunteer.
